The most important decision a teacher makes before going abroad is not which country to choose or which salary package to accept. It is which school to trust with your career and your daily life for the next one, two, or three years.
For teachers with strong values, whether those values are rooted in faith, cultural identity, or personal ethics, this decision carries extra weight. Not every school is the right school. Here is how to find the one that is.
Start With the School, Not the Country
A common mistake is to research the country broadly and then assume that any school within that country will reflect its cultural environment. This is not true. Within a single city, you can find schools that are deeply aligned with Islamic values and schools that operate as fully secular international institutions. They exist side by side and recruit from the same job boards.
Your research needs to go deeper than country profiles and cost of living guides.
Questions That Reveal the Truth
The most valuable information about a school’s values comes from asking direct questions during the recruitment process. Schools that are genuinely welcoming to teachers with strong values will answer these questions clearly and without hesitation. Schools that are not will often become evasive, dismissive, or confused about why you are asking.
Ask whether there is a dedicated prayer space on campus and how prayer schedules are accommodated during the school day. Ask how the school approaches Ramadan in terms of workload, catering, and staff support. Ask whether the school is gender segregated or mixed at the student level, and whether this applies to staff interactions as well. Ask to review sample teaching materials, particularly for English language courses, to understand what content is used and how teachers raise concerns about specific materials.
None of these questions are unusual. Any school that treats them as unusual is not the right school.
Look Beyond the School Website
School websites present the version of the school that the marketing department wants you to see. The real picture comes from other sources.
Search for the school by name in expat forums, teacher communities, and professional networks. Look for first-hand accounts from teachers who have worked there, particularly from teachers who share your background or values. Pay attention to patterns. One negative account might reflect one person’s experience. Multiple accounts mentioning the same issues are almost always telling you something real.
If possible, reach out directly to current or former staff members before accepting a position. Most people are willing to share their honest experience if you ask respectfully and privately.
Red Flags to Watch For
Certain signals during the recruitment process suggest a school may not be the right environment for a values-driven educator.
If a school is vague or dismissive about prayer accommodation, that tells you that this need has not been considered. If the recruiter seems surprised by questions about Ramadan or dress expectations, that tells you that Muslim staff members are not common enough for these questions to be routine. If the school materials you are shown include content that immediately conflicts with your values, and there is no clear process for raising concerns, that tells you that content review is not part of the school culture.
Trust your instincts during the interview process. The feeling you get from how your questions are received is often more accurate than any formal policy document.
The Long Game
Finding the right school takes longer. It requires more research, more direct questions, and the willingness to decline positions that look good on paper but feel wrong in practice.
But the long game is worth it. Research consistently shows that teachers who find environments aligned with their values stay longer, perform better, and report significantly higher job satisfaction. They also become the kind of staff members that schools build their culture around.
You are not being difficult by having standards. You are being strategic.
